PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Senior Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist – Environmental Focus is a critical member of the plant team who provides technical leadership and oversight to ensure environmental compliance and drive continuous improvement in environmental performance across the Aiken, SC and Blythewood, SC facilities. This role partners with plant leadership to build ownership, accountability, and a culture of environmental stewardship. This position reports to the Aiken EHS Leader.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Adhere to Safety and Environmental Responsibilities & Drive a Safer Together Culture.
- Ensure a safe, clean, and environmentally compliant work environment for employees, contractors, and visitors in which working Safer Together is the first priority
- Partner with the EHS team to conduct environmental incident investigations, as well as make recommendations to ensure regulatory inspection readiness
- Lead Environmental Initiatives and processes to drive towards zero non-conformities and NOV’s.
- Set and accomplish critical environmental metrics to ensure continuous improvement.
- Drive and sustain environmental excellence through use of the Environmental Management System.
- Authority to stop work or escalate conditions that pose environmental compliance risk.
Lead Sustainable Environmental Management
- Drive and maintain compliance with Environmental operating permits, such as US EPA Title V air permits, Municipal Wastewater permits, State or local Storm Water permits, Class II Landfill permits, SARA 311/ 313, Groundwater Compliance, and SPCC
- Develop and maintain environmental monitoring and recordkeeping to satisfy requirements of the plant’s operating permits
- Manage all aspects of the plant’s Hazardous waste, Solid waste, and Universal waste within Federal, State and Local guidelines
- Provide regulatory guidance to facility leadership team and operating personnel
- Review or change policies and procedures to comply with changes to Environmental regulations and standards
- Facilitate required Environmental testing of air, water and water sources
- Work with Division resources to facilitate Corporate Sustainability reporting, Green House Gas (GHG) reporting, Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT), and other current or pending regulatory requirements
- Interact with outside consultants/contractors on regulatory compliance. Track and approve consultant/contractors’ terms of service, budgets and spending.
- Provide leadership required ensuring operations and, maintenance personnel are aware of and held accountable for environmental compliance.
- Interact with agency personnel to facilitate site compliance inspections, inquiries and corrective actions.
- Maintain chemical approval process
Drive Plant Environmental Impact Improvements
- Develop and implement environmental programs such as air and water compliance, above-ground storage tanks, spill prevention and control, hazardous waste and materials management, solid waste recycling, and employee training
- Update compliance action item tracking tools and templates for existing and newly issued or updated permits. Track all items to on-time completion.
- Lead Environmental initiatives and processes to drive towards zero non-conformities and/or Notice of Violation (NOV’s)
- Assess product, process and operational changes to determine environmental impact
- Drive and sustain environmental excellence through use of the Environmental Management System
- Utilize process and engineering knowledge to identify and lead process improvements to reduce environmental impact and/or improve sustainability goals
- Enroll as the plant liaison on environmental issues affecting community and industrial neighbors
- Maintain a leadership presence on the plant floor, drive compliance behaviors through leadership engagement and accountability systems, and fully engage employees in the sound environmental process management process
- Guide the Natural Leadership Team (NLT) in developing risk-ranked strategic plans, prioritize and advocate capital/resource requests, and advise the leadership team on all aspects of environmental requirements and responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of all critical Environmental processes, programs, and procedures
- Sets and accomplishes critical environmental metrics regularly to ensure continuous improvement in the processes that lead to a 100% engaged culture on the floor
- Grow and develop the plant EHS advocates
Metrics
- Zero Notices of Violation (NOVs) for Federal, State and Local Environmental requirements
- 100% on-time completion of permit-required tasks
- Audit findings closure rate (time-bound)
- Corporate and Division Metrics for Sustainability targets (GHG, waste reduction, water usage)
- Plant Environmental metrics including Environmental Non-Conformities (ENC’s), NOV’s and Environmental Management System (EMS)
- Feedback from plant NLT members
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Qualifications:
- 5-8 years of experience working in an industrial or manufacturing environment
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Engineering, or related field or equivalent experience
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
Preferred Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental or Engineering related disciplines strongly preferred
- Site specific permitting knowledge / experience is a plus
