Job Title: Master Shop Technician
Department: Exterior Engineering
Location: DTC – Colfax, NC
Summary:
This is a lead style role intended to support our Product Development & Testing, Sales and Marketing departments in the preparation and assembly of Displays, Samples, Test units and prototype door systems. This role also includes the responsibility of training staff on Product usage and benefits.
Education/Experience/Skills:
- 10+ Years of experience with Exterior Door builds or Woodworking required
- CNC Operation experience required
- Operator level programming experiences a plus
- Proficient with MS Office software.
- Detail oriented with excellent analytical skills.
- Clear and professional communication, with the ability to explain, in writing, technical data that may be required for Patents.
- Mastery with shop tools (saws, drills, routers etc.) required, for the purposes of daily job responsibilities
- Ability to read and decipher technical documents, such as test standards, codes, patents or product drawings.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Duties & Responsibilities include:
- Support RD testing by working with test technicians to develop test set ups, on occasion execute testing, produce detailed test reports, and communicate technical data with Engineers
- Support Sample Shop production by producing engineered drawings for sample components that may be used in CNC applications
- Product Development Support:
- Fabricates components for (based on provided specifications, drawings or directions) and assembles new door system and component prototypes for R&D testing, evaluation and trials.
- Identifies design flaws and opportunities for improvement in new concepts.
- Offers constructive criticism to new design concepts.
- Collaborates with the PD engineering team on making design improvements or evaluating improvements through various prototype tweaks and modifications
- Marketing Support:
- Develops (fabricates and assembles) new POP display and salesman sample prototypes
- Collaborate with the marketing team on finding the best way to display new products’ features and benefits in a clear and logical manner
- Develops and assembles unique (less than 5 copies) displays for trade show events
- Designs and constructs jigs and fixtures for new displays/ samples demanded in large quantities
- Sales, Customer Service and Sample Shop Support:
- Develop and assembly unique, creative, low volume (less than 5 copies) sales samples for key sales events (key customer meetings, sales meetings, etc.)
- When needed, fabricate full system sample assemblies (mull packs) for sales samples and spec sign offs
- Assists and/ or leads sales training on new products and technologies
- Testing Support:
- If needed, create a door system specification
- Occasionally aid with fabricating components for assembly and test preparation.
- At times it may be necessary to assist in the building and bucking of door units for testing activities.
- Provide feedback on testing results observed and any suggestions as applicable for improved performance
- Assists in developing new and unique testing fixtures of in-house developed test plans.
- Working Conditions/Physical Effort:
- A combination of typical office conditions and workshop environment. Office work is performed in a sitting position with some moving from office to office and Plant-to-Plant required. The plants are not climate controlled and must be capable of working in an environment with heat in excess of 90 degrees. Shop work is performed in a standing position and requires the use of typical woodworking power tools, and the manipulation and movement of pre-hung door assemblies. The flow of work and scope of duties involves use of upper and lower body motions. Lifting objects weighting up to 50lbs. required approximately 35% of the time. Assisted movement of door assemblies weighing up to 300lbs required less than 10% of the time.
