Warehouse & Receiving Material Handler

Primary Purpose:
The primary purpose of this position is to receive, store, organize, and pull raw material in the lower plant. This includes unloading trucks, placing material in pallet racks, pulling partials from pallet racks, placing material at production lines, and maintaining general organization of the material in the Lower Plant. Scanning and barcoding knowledge is required. Excellent quality control (QC) ability is needed to maintain a high-quality program on inbound materials.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
Warehouse Operations & Inventory Management
- Unload all material delivered to the lower plant and load all pickups and deliveries.
- Receive all inbound freight into the inventory system, barcode materials, and properly store them in assigned bin locations.
- Assign items to bin locations when putting materials up and perform all necessary scanning when moving materials within the building.
- Maintain complete working knowledge of all part numbers, items, and scanning procedures.
- Assist inventory personnel with tracking positive and negative sheets and resolve scanning issues.
- Take full ownership of the warehouse area and Coater Building, ensuring strict organization, material accuracy, and high standards of housekeeping.
- Complete cycle counting tasks when normal daily duties are up to date.
- Provide back-up coverage for the Lower Plant Shipper and Lower Plant Inventory Clerk as required.
Production Support
- Keep all work centers running efficiently by supplying needed materials to the production lines as a top priority. Never allow lines to shut down due to a lack of raw material.
- Recognize and pull various production materials from the warehouse to production areas (including astragal bodies, strike supports, wood profiles, plastic parts, etc.).
- Develop a deep working knowledge of the RF system and the majority of part numbers used in the lower plant.
Quality Control
- Perform thorough QC checks on raw materials before placement in warehouse or production areas, with a specific focus on components with historical quality variances (such as door bottom length, staple tests on door bottoms and door stops, raw metal specs for mating parts, and astragal process mating parts).
- Demonstrate excellent knowledge of all astragal and door bottom components and processing procedures.
Safety & Facility Maintenance
- Maintain certification to drive a forklift and complete all necessary daily equipment checks.
- Keep all doorways, aisles, electrical panel boxes, and fire extinguishers clear at all times.
- Ensure all trash is dumped at least daily, or more frequently as necessary.
- Keep work areas completely clear of unused racks and pallets.
- Notify supervisors and management immediately of any damage to forklifts, buildings, stock-outs, or quality/safety issues.
- Actively participate in the company's Safety Suggestion program by submitting a minimum of 3 safety suggestions per year.
Job Analysis & Specifications
- Job Knowledge & Experience: Completion of the 12th grade is required due to production accountability. Approximately 3 to 6 months of work experience is required to become skilled in all phases of the job. Must possess 3 to 6 months of forklift driving experience and pass both a written forklift exam and a practical driving test.
- Skills: Must have the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. Must be capable of reading a tape measure. Excellent communication skills are required to interact effectively across all aspects of the Lower Plant operations.
- Initiative & Ingenuity: Work priorities are determined by supervisor instructions and incoming materials. The individual must be self-motivated, capable of working independently with limited supervision, and able to follow verbal and written instructions while understanding the impact of their role on daily operations.
- Supervision Received: This position operates under the direct guidance of the Shipping Supervisor and Plant Manager. The employee will coordinate work with other material handlers, lead personnel, and supervisors, and report operational or handler deficiencies as needed.
- Responsibility for Material, Product, & Equipment: Carelessness in transporting materials and finished product could result in expensive damage or loss. Errors involving inventory, assembly line downtime, or missed shipments directly impact daily operations. The individual is responsible for ensuring all preventative maintenance on equipment is completed on a timely basis.
- Contact with Others: Regular contact with other employees, lead people, and staff members requires clear, concise, and professional communication skills.
- Physical Effort: Duties involve continuous hand, wrist, and arm motions, with the ability to sit on a forklift for an entire shift. Normal or corrected hearing and vision are necessary. Requires manual coordination, walking, bending, twisting, stooping, climbing over freight, and lifting approximately 35 lbs. Any lifting exceeding 35 pounds must be performed with assistance. Good hand-eye coordination is required to operate forklift controls.
- Working Conditions & Hazards: Exposed to a standard factory environment (including wood dust and aluminum) with no factors present to a disagreeable extent. Must be able to withstand heat up to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Operation of a forklift requires continuous caution to prevent falls, back strain, cuts, or crush injuries.
- Safety Responsibilities: Must adhere strictly to all safety rules and regulations specified in the Company Safety Manual. This includes wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses and earplugs, at all times.
