At the heart of a continuous-strand fiberglass manufacturing operation is the bushing, a precious metal alloy component similar to an extrusion die.  The design, manufacture and operation of the bushing components are critical to the success of Owens Corning.  The primary responsibility of the Materials Process Engineer will be to serve as the subject matter expert for the precious metal alloys used in the bushing (extrusion die). They will investigate quality issues and troubleshoot solutions, document learnings and best practices, and partner with the manufacturing teams to implement and sustain improvements.

Location: Concord, NC (On-site)

 

Span of Control:  No direct reports

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Lives the OC Safety stand and adhere to the safety responsibilities
  • Demonstrates a commitment to employee health and safety, particularly through a commitment to zero injuries, awareness of hazards, and a strong understanding of legislative requirements in all aspects of the operation
  • Expands material mechanical property testing (creep, tensile, fatigue, etc.) to align with the end-use operating conditions and develops new test methods to support this work
  • Partners with the design engineers to incorporate material property data into the modeling software
  • Leads root cause analysis of premature bushing failures and material quality issues
  • Develops and maintains a global standard that monitors and improves material impurities using OES/ICP/XRF methods
  • Evaluates the manufacturing process to identify opportunities that will improve material consistency and performance. Creates project plans and executes to improve local plant performance and cascade improvements globally.
  • Supports cost reduction and quality improvement projects at the global manufacturing locations in Concord NC, Singapore, and Suzhou China
  • Partners with the manufacturing teams to evaluate and implement new technologies that could improve the business, applying improvements to the global alloy facilities
  • Coordinates with the global manufacturing and technical teams to implement and sustain changes
  • Serve as process engineer at assigned location, with responsibly for delivering project outcomes or process improvements in partnership with operations team.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or Metallurgy/Material Science (or other engineering degree with applicable experience)
  • Manufacturing experience with metals (casting, forging, rolling, etc.)
  • Interpersonal skills to communicate across all layers of the organization, including Senior management, primary workforce and other technical disciplines
  • Proven experience with test method development for material testing
  • Experience with materials characterization techniques (OES/ICP/XRF, metallography, scanning electron microscopy, mechanical and hardness testing, etc.)
  • Experience working in a lab environment and translating learnings to the shop floor
  • Willing to travel up to 35%, some international
  • Ideal candidate will be able to provide specific examples of evaluations of metal materials that demonstrate not only an ability to follow standards, but also a deeper understanding of the functional requirements of the property evaluation using a first principles approach

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • MS in Mechanical Engineering or Metallurgy/Materials Science
  • Formal training in welding/joining engineering
  • Experience with structural design and modeling software
  • High-temperature materials and design experience, including creep and fatigue
  • Powder metallurgy experience
