PURPOSE OF THE JOB

 

The Quality and Process Engineer is responsible for ensuring our products meet our customers’ exact requirements and that our processes are capable and consistent. The position also manages all plant quality systems, lab operations, and customer interaction with regard to quality.  The successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership in prior roles and will continue to develop leadership skills in this role.

 

Reports to:  Plant Technical Leader

 

Span of Control:  All manufacturing processes and products of Delmar Plant, including Quality Lab operations and personnel.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build and foster an “incident-free” safety culture
  • Utilize technical knowledge to provide a safe and secure work environment for all employees, contractors, and visitors
  • Ensure all practices and procedures within job scope are safe, environmentally compliant, and permit compliant

 

Technical Excellence and Process Optimization (60%)

  • Owns all aspects of quality at the local level - Quality Lab operations, personnel, procedures, and asset management
  • Understand current manufacturing process capability, drive to reduce variation, and ensure product quality and consistency to improve the overall customer experience
  • Continuously improve manufacturing productivity through process technology, optimizing density efficiency, piece job efficiency, spinner efficiency, operating efficiency, and other direct costs (direct materials, energy, transportation, and labor)
  • Ensures nonconforming products are not shipped to our customers and contributes to root cause analyses
  • Lead the QM Pillar and participate in other TPM/continuous improvement initiatives, supporting the Technical Leader as necessary in the FI Pillar
  • Ensure Insulation Operations maintains process standards and leverages knowledge for rapid deployment of best practices
  • Act as primary plant contact with the Center of Excellence/Product & Process Innovation Teams to implement development improvements
  • Participate in the charter, scope development, and execution of projects, including rebuilds, to ensure safety, performance, schedule and cost goals of the projects are met or exceeded
  • Ensure that all customer complaints are recorded, communicated plant-wide and thoroughly investigated (root cause analysis), promptly addressed with customers, and eliminate repetitive complaints
  • Promote a data-driven approach to all quality and process related problems
  • Ensure that all plant quality testing equipment is calibrated and testing methods are followed
  • Facilitate quality related training to ensure understanding of customer requirements, process variables, SPC procedures and practices
  • Actively participate in the quality network and be a conduit for best practice sharing in the plant with respect to product quality and service

 

Knowing Our Customer (20%)

  • Understand and communicate customer expectations to employees through effective use of product specifications, standard work, control plans, routine reporting, and quality alerts
  • Ensure standard processes are defined and in place that will reliably provide products that meet customer performance expectations
  • Maintain quality claims system (PQS) and ensure timely response if customer concerns arise
  • Facilitate a culture to develop, maintain, and continuously improve customer relationships
  • Drive understanding of customer requirements and the relationship to plant process variables to ensure that products meet the customer FFU at all times
  • Partner with OC Sales to stay current with customer needs, product performance in the field, and opportunities for expanded product offerings or performance

 

Leading and Developing Talent (20%)

  • Create and sustain a culture where Manufacturing Engineer talent is developed through effective technical training and provide appropriate feedback on individual performance and talent evaluation
  • Act as Development Coach when appropriate and mentor other Development Coaches for early career development participants, creating the appropriate developmental experience and assuring the program outcome is achieved
  • Identify and provide training and development opportunities for direct reports (lab personnel)
  • Support the continuous improvement of training and onboarding new employees, both hourly and salary

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Six Sigma Green Belt and/or Lean Manufacturing experience

 

EXPERIENCE:

  • Three years technical experience as a Manufacturing Engineer
  • Proven results in driving product and process improvement in the manufacturing environment

  • Utilizing data systems and Six Sigma methods to eliminate manufacturing losses and unnecessary costs
  • Minitab statistical analysis experience
  • Impactful verbal and written communications

  • Strong planning, resourcing, and delegation skills
  • Ability to engage and care for others, starting with safety
  • Ability to achieve results quickly, both individually and through teams

The base salary range for this position is $89,000-$116,000 with the potential for up to an additional 25% if the applicant hired has additional related qualifications.
