Purpose of the Job
The Plant Controller provides financial leadership for a manufacturing facility and serves as a strategic business partner to the Plant Leader and site leadership team. This position is responsible for driving financial performance, operational excellence, profitability, capital efficiency, and internal controls while ensuring compliance with corporate policies, GAAP, and SOX requirements.
As a key member of the plant leadership team, the Plant Controller translates operational performance into actionable financial insights, supports strategic decision-making, leads planning and forecasting processes, and develops a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and business ownership across the facility. The role may also provide leadership and oversight of administrative and operational support functions including procurement, inventory control, warehouse operations, shipping, scheduling, storeroom management, and site security.
Job Responsibilities
Operations Planning & Strategic Business Partnership
- Partner with the Plant Leader and leadership team to establish operational objectives aligned with division and corporate strategies.
- Translate business plans into measurable operational and financial targets.
- Lead scenario planning, risk analysis, contingency development, and corrective action planning.
- Develop proactive plans to mitigate risks and optimize plant financial performance and shareholder value.
- Support the development and execution of strategic initiatives that drive long-term business growth.
Financial Planning, Reporting & Analysis
- Lead annual operating plan and monthly forecasting
- Prepare and present financial forecasts, projections, and performance updates to leadership.
- Oversee monthly close activities, ensuring accurate inventory valuation, accruals, and financial reporting.
- Perform root-cause variance analysis for variances relating to Materials, Labor, OH, and overall operational performance
- Provide actionable business insights that support staffing, production planning, maintenance spending, procurement decisions, and customer commitments.
- Build and maintain KPI scorecards that connect safety, quality, service, productivity, and cost performance to financial outcomes.
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Ensure the effectiveness of internal controls and compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) requirements.
- Lead annual control assessments, audits, and remediation activities.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Foster a culture of accountability, ethics, and financial discipline across the organization.
ERP & Process Improvement Leadership
- Lead and support SAP implementation, stabilization, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Drive optimization and standardization of financial and operational processes.
Capital & Investment Management
- Develop and evaluate business cases for capital investments using ROI, NPV, and payback methodologies.
- Provide investment analysis and recommendations for operational improvement projects.
- Track project spending and verify achievement of projected benefits.
- Support prioritization of projects that improve safety, quality, throughput, and profitability.
Cross-functional Leadership and Team Contribution
- Proactively participates in plant operations via internal meetings, interaction with staff and hourly employees, walk the floor, advocate safety.
- Work across organization boundaries and all levels of the company to achieve plant, division and/or corporate objectives
- Shares best practices across the business, i.e. process improvements, financial modeling and procedures changes.
- Aligns teams and resources to solve problems and drive results
- Provides support to team members at plant, segment and corporate level
Leadership & Talent Development
- Develop a culture of accountability, engagement, and performance.
- Educate leaders and plant personnel on financial principles and key business metrics.
- Coach and develop direct reports and emerging talent.
- Lead succession planning and talent development efforts.
- Align teams and resources to solve problems and achieve plant, division, and corporate objectives.

Job Requirements
Experience:
-
Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or relevant discipline
-
2 plus years operating in a range of economic conditions, i.e. expansion, contraction, stable economic conditions - forecasting, scenario planning, risk analysis and contingency development

Providing leadership within a manufacturing organization leading operation planning, savings, forecasting and investment analysis

Participating in the development of strategic plans
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Strong financial acumen with demonstrated analytical ability accompanied by knowledge of corporate finance and manufacturing costing principles, understands P&L and balance sheet dynamics

Providing leadership to organizations within a manufacturing operation(s) – leading operations planning, savings, forecasting and investment analysis

SAP experience, preferred

Strong skills in Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
