PURPOSE OF THE JOB

 

The primary role of the Materials Characterization Lab Leader is to drive continuous improvements in lab operations and identify processes to enhance lab efficiencies. The successful candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of mechanical testing instrumentation and analysis within the Materials Characterization lab, facilitating clear communication with customers and collaboration with business and other S&T functions to address customer issues.

 

The Lab Leader will oversee daily operations, develop new testing capabilities, optimize and implement processes, provide data analysis and interpretation of results for project stakeholders, and collaborate with global internal and external innovation partners. This individual will manage workflows for customer requests, prioritize tasks, and identify necessary resources. Additionally, the Lab Leader will lead safety efforts, ensuring compliance with all policies and documentation, and foster teamwork within the broader GR S&T organization for effective collaboration.

 

Span of Control:  1 contractor with possible expansion to 2 direct reports in 2026.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Safety Leadership (10%)

·       Lead corporate safety initiatives within the Materials Characterization Lab.

·       Ensure rigorous compliance with standard safety procedures and corporate policies.

·       Empower employees to take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of those around them.

·       Manage Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), and Management of Change (MOC) systems for the lab.

·       Facilitate a rigorous preventive maintenance plan for lab instruments.

 

MCL Operational Leadership and Technical Execution (70%)

·       Utilize Wavefront/LIMS to establish workflows, data collection, and reporting, identifying areas for modernization and improvements.

·       Act as the primary point of contact between customers and the lab, gathering detailed information to understand the purpose, timing, and specific needs of test requests. Evaluate and prioritize test requests and provide regular updates and managing expectations effectively.

·       Perform testing, analysis of test data and provide technical insights and recommendations to customers.

·       Schedule and manage regular calibrations for critical lab equipment such as Instrons, Balances & Scales, Surface Analyzers, etc.

·       Identify and collaborate with third-party labs for testing services beyond the capabilities or resources of MCL.

·       Identify needs for new capability development to meet customer requirements. Lead the development and implementation of new characterization techniques, instruments, and processes. Manage capital projects for the acquisition and installation of new equipment.

·       Develop and apply scientific and engineering principles, focusing on composite material properties. Optimize standard test methodologies to meet evolving customer needs, enhancing safety, quality, and efficiency.

·       Represent Glass Reinforcement S&T organization in ASTM standard committees.

·       Travel 0-5%.

 

People Leadership (20%)

·       Lead and mentor MCL personnel, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.

·       Work with each employee to identify objectives that align with the goals of the lab and business units, and help employees acquire the skills needed for their career development.

·       Evaluate areas where cross-training is needed to improve team versatility and efficiency. Develop and assign comprehensive training plans to MCL and broader S&T team personnel, ensuring they acquire the necessary skills and knowledge.

 

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

Minimum Qualifications   

·       Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, or a related field.

·       5+ years of experience in a lab environment.

·       Familiarity with ASTM and ISO testing standards.

·       Mechanical testing Instrumentation knowledge

·       Proficiency in data analysis, technical writing, and presentation skills.

·       Proficiency in MS office suite.

·       Hands-on R&D experience with a proven application of science and/or engineering fundamentals.

 

Preferred Qualification

·       Lean or Six Sigma certification.

·       Experience in composite mechanical testing.

·       Proficiency in Wavefront/LIMS systems.

·       Laboratory management experience, including prioritization and oversight of workflow.

·       People leadership experience.
