PURPOSE OF THE JOB

 

The Associate Scientist – Glass Fiber Reinforcements performs lab or pilot scale work focused on developing new products and processes applications for glass fiber reinforcements under the direction of product developers and fundamentals scientists and engineers. This individual is responsible for producing data and samples for glass fiber reinforcement development, sizing formulations, equipment operation and maintenance, and characterization of experimental products. The successful candidate performs experimental work, provides actionable observations, and communicates experimental results. The individual has strong technical proficiency with the opportunity to develop technical expertise through a mixture of lab work and projects. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Safety (10%)

 

Product and Process Development (80%)

  • Deliver lab or pilot material, characterization data, and insights to product scientists and process engineers for product or process development of glass fiber reinforcement products through formulation development, fabrication and mimic technology, testing, and characterization on lab or pilot scale equipment. Lab areas include forming pilot line, sizing lab, testing, and prototyping.
  • Apply and develop scientific and engineering principles for glass fiber reinforcements products and properties in collaboration with product developers and fundamentals scientists and engineers.
  • Develop proficiency and fundamental understanding of established test methods used to generate required results (ASTM, established test methods).  Adapt or create methods and protocols as necessary to characterize new products and technologies.
  • Key project team member for product & process development, engineering, plant support, customer support, and forming and pilot lab continuous improvement projects which may include:
    • Project management and coordination
    • Engineer –
      • Design engineering of equipment
      • Recommendation, selection, or creation of new equipment, processes, or capabilities for composites.
    • Scientist –
      • Design and execution of experiments
      • Recommendation, selection, or creation of new formulations or products for composites

 

Laboratory Continuous Improvement or Projects (10%)

  • Drive lab operations or lab projects (method implementation, equipment upgrades, continuous improvement) for quality and productivity improvements including documentation, user training, process optimization, and lab digitization.
  • Support the transfer of new product/processes from the laboratory to manufacturing plant or customer as needed.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or High school/Associates degree in technical field with 3-5 years’ experience
  • Ability to perform laboratory testing following established lab procedures.
  • Ability to use laboratory and pilot equipment to produce material samples.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering
  • Chemical, mechanical, or QA lab experience.
  • Lab instrument interfacing and export capability with some programming ability.
  • Experience auditing and implementing new test methods, SOPs from ASTM, ISO standards.
