PURPOSE OF THE JOB

 

The OC Global Capital Delivery team is accountable for the overall delivery of the OC capital plan on an annual basis.  This consists of all aspects of completing capital projects from the Statement of Requirements for a project to the strategy of implementation, detailed design, execution, and commissioning of capital projects on a global basis for all Owens Corning business lines. Total project size typically ranges between $15MM and $200MM, however this position will manage a part of the larger project ranging between $1MM and $15MM.

The scope of this job will include the capital management of material transport and batch system projects which includes scope development, cost estimation, design engineering leadership, and project management for all batch delivery systems worldwide.  Batch System Capital Delivery Projects will be conducted utilizing an established TPM methodology for project management. 

 

Batch delivery systems involve raw material receiving, raw material storage, dosing, blending and delivery of mixed batch to the glass melter (furnace).  The batch system must be capable of providing a controlled and consistent batch which will produce a consistent molten glass in the furnace. 

 

The assignment will involve working closely with cross-functional teams.  Typically, each time a furnace is taken out of service there is a goal to increase productivity by increasing throughput which typically requires improvements in the batch house necessary to achieve this goal. Batch System upgrade projects conducted outside of melter rebuilds occur on a limited basis as well. As Batch Systems are upgraded, engineering controls to reduce / eliminate dust emissions are required.  A portion of the assignment will involve working with strategic controls to replace the legacy control systems with newer technology. The role may include providing consultation or support of operating Batch Systems as needed.

 

Responsibilities include definition of design development, execution of design, specification development, purchase requisition initiation, technical contract creation, construction interfacing and commissioning of batch systems. Lead is expected to manage and lead design resources and managing within the EM project stage gate process. Lead will also be engaged on operational projects with the global stable operations organization and participate in support of best practice gathering and proliferation.

The successful candidate must be a flexible individual that can work effectively across the global organization, be a good communicator, and excel at teamwork.  The individual must be comfortable on the manufacturing plant floor for equipment start-up and commissioning.  This position will be based out of Granville, Ohio and requires a minimum of 20% to 30% travel.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Overall project leadership directed towards consistent execution and standardization of batch and material handling process systems globally for Owens Corning
  • Fundamental understanding of bulk material storage, handling, dosing, and conveying.
  • Detailed mechanical design knowledge of batch systems and batch process control
  • Development of cost estimates and scopes of work for internal engineering, outside engineering firms, and capital equipment delivery.
  • Development of specifications for procurement and design of batch process systems
  • Supervision of batch design firms in the development of drawing packages for batch equipment:  hardware selection, drawings, layouts, and interface diagrams
  • Coordinate with various process discipline counterparts on process interfaces, systems integration, and equipment installations (Civil, Electrical, HVAC, etc...)
  • Knowledgeable in the development of P&IDs, hardware selection, layouts and interface drawings.
  • Experience in equipment check out, debugging, start-up / commissioning and troubleshooting.
  • Ensure the Owens Corning safety culture is maintained through the design
  • Drive continuous improvement and benchmarking through all aspects of engineering involvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide complex and innovative solutions to design and construction problems.
  • Demonstrated drive and initiative to complete tasks proactively and with limited oversight and multiple concurrent projects
  • Capable of clearly communicating technical concepts and results to an audience of variable technical and process understanding

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS or Equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or Ceramic/Material Science Engineering
  • Experience in equipment check out, debugging, start-up / commissioning and troubleshooting.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in the bulk powder/bulk material handling systems a plus.
  • Knowledge of the sensitivity of the impact of raw material shifts and weighing variation effect material chemistry, consistency and product quality is a plus.
  • Bulk powder storage, dosing, measuring, delivery, conveying knowledge is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of glass furnace operations.
  • Modular design/implementation experience

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Must be computer literate and have experience with computer controlled operations.
  • Proficient with AutoCAD Design and Inventor modelling Software, and other related design packages.
  • Design for manufacturing skills
  • Solid knowledge of OSHA regulations relating to design and construction processes
