PURPOSE OF JOB

 

The Roofing Self-Adhered Underlayment Development Engineer is key to growing Owens Corning’s and our customers’ business through driving the use and continuous development of Owens Corning’s Roofing Components portfolio.  This position plays a key role in product and process development, building technical capability and driving growth and leadership within the self-adhered portfolio.  The Self-Adhered Development Engineer will work closely with other technical teams, manufacturing teams and business and operational managers. The Self-Adhered Development Engineer will lead key workstreams within self-adhered roofing underlayments and provide ongoing technical support.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY LEADERSHIP (80%)

  • Lead the development of new manufacturing technologies for the self-adhered underlayment product portfolio to secure and strengthen competitive advantage.
  • Lead process and manufacturing technology projects from from lab-scale to full-scale, including build/installs of new manufacturing lines or unit operations.
  • Support product / process development initiatives with new or expanded manufacturing technology capabilities to further differentiate products in the market.
  • Develop clear process development pipeline to enable our aspiration to become market-leaders in self-adhered products, including, but not limited to, reinforced, unreinforced and specialty waterproofing membranes for building envelope. Drive technology development projects individually and with teams to execute on top priorities.
  • Develop viewpoint on competitive process technologies and IP landscapes, and identify whitespace to focus invention and development efforts to win today and in the future.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and insight of internal and external customers and incorporate them into the design criteria of any new manufacturing technology development to fulfill their business needs and exceed their expectations.
  • Partner closely with leaders inside and outside R&D (Asphalt, Operations, Marketing, Sales, Sourcing, and Finance) to identify, prioritize, and resource the most impactful initiatives, balancing both short term and long term needs.  Drive alignment on what business or technical trade-offs need to be made to execute our most impactful technology development initiatives on-time and on-budget.
  • Solve complex problems by robustly applying the scientific method.
  • Communicate technical results to project teams.  Author summary reports on technical findings

BUILD ORGANIZATIONAL TECHNICAL CAPABILITY (10%)

  • Develop clear vision, strategy, and management systems to drive capability growth across several R&D competencies, including process development, proof of performance, and rapid prototyping.
  • Identify and fill technical needs that would move initiatives forward through equipment or vendors that expand OC’s technical manufacturing possibilities.
  • Partner with key external providers to identify and source appropriate technologies and build the systems and approaches to enable effective use of “open innovation” for OC.

 

PROJECT MANAGEMENT (10%)

  • Define and drive process improvement projects, partnering strongly across functions to align and deliver successful outcomes.
  • Define, manage and communicate the scope, timeline and resources needed. 
  • Identify, assess and mitigate risks to effectively manage changes throughout the project.
  • Provide technical recommendations and feedback to others, sharing knowledge throughout the organization.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with people across different functions in the organization.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related technical field.
  • Technical Expertise in Self-Adhered Membranes and minimum 10 years industry experience in process or product development is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate new and innovative product or process designs in continuous manufacturing processes.

  • Ability to travel up to 40% of the time (varies depending on project need).  Travel will be U.S. based and pre-planned.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with asphalt and non-asphalt based adhesive technologies preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record of manufacturing technology development.
  • Experience in consumer branded product and/or process development.
