PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Sr. Design and Modeling Engineer manages the development, implementation, and support of new technologies related to global advanced modeling operations. This role will focus on part and system level design of fiber reinforced composite applications for material, structural and process. The Senior Engineer will translate customer product, process & application needs into effective product/process specification and lead modeling projects to successfully deliver solutions.

The incumbent is expected to have strong engineering expertise with a demonstrated track record in fiber reinforced composite design and modeling.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Live Safely

Fiber Reinforced Composite design and modeling - Material, Structural & Processes (approximate 75%)
- Design and model laminate, part, and system for composite materials using Finite Element (FE) Analysis.
- Create new CAD designs or modify existing ones as per application needs. Develop meshing to convert CAD to FE models.
- Develop material data cards with composite products for linear/non-linear analysis and process modeling.
- Conduct composite manufacturing process modeling to guide part/tooling design, troubleshoot issues, and optimize process parameters.
- Document analysis in detailed technical reports, presentations, and management updates.
- Actively participate in global multi-disciplinary product development, process improvement, and problem-solving teams.
- Provide technical service to help customers reduce costs, enhance their products, and access new markets.
Development and delivery of modeling technologies (approximate 25%)
- Develop linkage between micro, macro, and process modeling for composites applications.
- Conduct research and development in computer modeling for current and future glass reinforcement solutions, enabling the company to maintain its leadership position in global markets.
- Understand the latest modeling and material characterization tool enhancements and improve current resources, including micro-mechanics, stability, and durability.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Materials Science, or a related field of study.
- Proficient in performing Finite Element analysis (static & dynamic) of fiber-reinforced composite materials.
- Deep understanding of fiber-reinforced composite structure-property relations, material behavior, and failure modes under static & dynamic loading.
- Strong background and experience in part design and application development using thermoset & thermoplastic composite materials.
- Experience in composite process modeling (Moldex3D preferred).
- Ability to create and modify CAD files and meshing to convert to Finite Element models.
- Ability to travel up to 5-10%. Travel schedule is typically set in advance.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- PhD Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Materials Science, or a related field of study.
- Five or more years of experience in composite modeling, including laminate design, Finite Element Analysis, and compression or injection molding process modeling.
- Experience with Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) design and characterization.
- Hands-on experience with typical composite manufacturing processes (open and close molding, SMC, pultrusion, filament winding, infusion, etc.).
- Proven track record of success in working with customers on designing composite applications and systems.
- Experience in Python scripting (Abaqus).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
- Problem-solving with a scientific approach.
- Proficiency in CAD and meshing software – Solidworks, Hypermesh, Abaqus-CAE.
- Familiarity with tools for part & system level design/modeling – Abaqus (preferred), Ansys, Digimat, Moldex3D (preferred), MoldFlow.
- Project management experience.
- Strong technical documentation skills.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of an international team.
- Strong background in fiber-reinforced composite material behavior, testing, and failure analysis.
- Hands-on experience with fiber-reinforced composite processes and an understanding of how the process affects the properties of the composite part in real applications.
