PURPOSE OF THE JOB

 

The role of Senior Scientist for Glass in Owens Corning’s R&D organization is accountable for the development of glasses and the material inputs to make glass.  Responsibilities include development of new glasses and improvement of existing ones, experimental design and analysis, creation of empirical models, identifying novel glass-making materials (both virgin and recycled), and support of procurement initiatives.  The successful candidate will work across OC’s glass platforms and material needs, taking a leading role in developing solutions to challenging problems that turn knowledge into value.  The job is located in Granville, OH.  Travel requirements are expected to be 10-20%, including domestic and international travel to support R&D and business priorities.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Glass Science (90%)

  • Leverage fundamentals of glass science to develop novel glass formulations to allow for growth in existing markets and expansion into new ones.
  • Develop property vs. chemistry models that enable improved process control and product performance.
  • Utilize Glass S&T’s comprehensive lab capabilities and other internal and external facilities to study a wide range of glass properties for use in modeling and product development.
  • Collaborate with product teams to improve product performance.
  • Proactive in developing and protecting Owens Corning’s intellectual property and has a clear view on how IP connects to business benefits.
  • Analyze experimental data, interpret results, and draw meaningful conclusions, while ensuring the highest level of data integrity and quality.

 

Productivity & Stable Operations (10%)

  • Work with Owens Corning production facilities, sourcing organizations, and vendors to reduce raw material cost and improve raw material quality and supply security.
  • Develop solutions that improve production efficiency and reduce production cost.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Glass Science, Ceramic Science, Materials Science, or similar technical field.
  • 3+ years of experience in R&D.
  • Proven track record of leading successful research projects.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Strong knowledge of batch raw material and glass reactions.
  • Understanding a wide range of analytical equipment and techniques used to study glasses and glass-making materials.
  • Broad experience with glass-making materials (both raw & recycled) to be used in OC’s global operational network, including processing and handling.
  • Demonstrates strong project leadership skills.
  • Skilled in use of statistical tools such as Minitab, JMP, or Python.
