PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The role of Materials Scientist for Glass-Making Materials in Owens Corning’s R&D organization is accountable for the raw and recycled inputs used to produce glass. Responsibilities encompass the identification, qualification, and specification of glass-making materials (existing and novel) in partnership with internal and external teams across the breadth of OC’s global glass platforms. Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for applied petrography to analyze glass beads and stones through partnership with our internal Analytical team and Operations. The successful candidate will work across OC’s glass platforms and material needs, taking a leading role in developing solutions to challenging problems that turn knowledge into value. The job is located in Granville, OH. Travel requirements are expected to be 10-20%, including domestic and international travel to support R&D and business priorities.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Raw & Recycled Materials
- Develop/maintain material specifications for both raw and recycled materials across OC’s glass platforms.
- Leverage understanding of recycled materials and their processing techniques to allow for improved recycled content, lower embodied carbon, and/or improved cost.
- Partner with Sourcing to insure competitively priced dual sources of supply for materials across OC’s glass platforms, including identification and qualification of new materials and/or sources of supply.
- Develop technical partnerships with suppliers focused on chemistry, analytical techniques, particle size, consistency, etc.
- Use digital platforms to organize and report relevant material data to partners in the glass-making space.
- Partner with Operations, Sourcing, Supply Chain, and vendors on root cause analysis of escalations and near misses.
- Petrography
- Ensure appropriate petrography equipment is present and maintained in Granville labs and plant locations. Justify and execute capital projects to improve capabilities, as necessary.
- Train Operations personnel to insure appropriate level of competency in petrography and fiber break studies. Audit plant equipment to insure good working order.
- Assist Operations in analysis of glass beads and stones from plant escalation events.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in the geosciences (e.g. mineralogy, geology, geochemistry), materials science (inorganic), mining engineering, ceramic engineering, or related scientific/engineering fields.
- 3+ years of experience in mineral/recycled materials processing.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Master’s degree in the geosciences (e.g. mineralogy, geology, geochemistry), materials science (inorganic), mining engineering, ceramic engineering, or related scientific/engineering fields.
- 3+ years of experience in glass melting and/or manufacturing.
- Prior petrography experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Broad knowledge of glass-making materials (both raw & recycled) to be used in OC’s global operational network, including processing and handling.
- Understanding a wide range of analytical equipment and techniques used to study glass-making materials.
- Excellent problem-framing and -solving skills synthesizing data from multiple sources & points of view quickly.
- Strong analytical and data interpretation skills (including statistical tools such as Minitab, JMP, or Python)
- Outstanding in technical communication and documentation – clear and concise in written and verbal forms.
- Self-starter who works with minimal supervision, balancing multiple projects.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate as part of a team as the work necessitates.
- Demonstrates strong project leadership skills.
- Ability to travel globally.
