PURPOSE OF THE JOB

 

The Building Elements Engineer is a technical subject matter expert position to provide design guidance for the use of composite materials including composite lumber and other composite products in building and construction. This team member will create customer facing technical documentation in partnership with strategic marketing, partner with innovation colleagues to create new tools and models to predict performance in end use application and act as a structural or architectural engineer when customers need technical consultation.

 

This role is responsible to generate construction methods, material assemblies and finished systems recommendations through modeling, prototyping and performance testing for composite building materials. Primary materials of focus will be Owens Corning Lumber, a plastic composite lumber.  This person will leverage innovation and performance testing to ideate and prove performance of novel assembly methods and inform current customers, perspective customers and broad markets how to leverage composite materials.  This person will join a small, agile team of scientists, engineers, and technicians to drive product usage, while also creating a culture of inclusive thinking and investing in their career growth and development. The successful candidate will coordinate and communicate across cross-functional groups of collaborators and stakeholders.

Reports to: Sr. R&D Leader

Location:  Granville, OH Science & Technology Center; This role could be eligible for remote/hybrid with approximately 6 days per month in Granville, Ohio. We encourage interested applicants to apply for this role by May 12, 2024

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Know the Business and Technology

  • Research building and construction market methods and products, including residential and light commercial
  • Connect with customers to specify materials and construction assembly methods for composite or traditional building materials (lumber, concrete, etc.)
  • Identify and interpret codes and testing/certification requirements to apply against novel building materials
  • Participate on appropriate code bodies and attend relevant trade shows to stay informed on market direction and novel products

 

Structural and Architectural Engineering with Composites

  • Accountable for disseminating guidance on system assemblies and material performances of composite building materials
  • Generate tools and documentation that can be used by customers for building and construction with composite building materials like Owens Corning Lumber.
  • Prioritize work requests to meet the needs of the business strategy
  • Lead relationships with 3rd party testing organizations and product auditors
  • Provide customer insights for new innovations and assemblies to maximize in-use performance
  • Develop methods for connecting and fastening composite building materials
  • Documents and shares knowledge throughout the organization and influences project directions

 

Project management

  • Define and drive product certification projects, partnering strongly across functions and with external experts to align and deliver successful outcomes.
  • Define, manage and communicate the scope, timeline and resources needed. 
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate risks and effectively manage changes throughout the project.
  • Provide technical direction and feedback to others, sharing knowledge throughout the organization.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with people across functions and at all levels within the organization

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in civil engineering, structural engineering, architectural engineering or related
  • Experience in traditional building materials such as wood lumber, aluminum, concrete or steel requested
  • Experience in test methods for material performance, and connecting product into assemblies and systems
  • Multi-functional leadership skills:  ability to manage across functions from product management, marketing, operations, and other R&D functions.
  • Demonstrated understanding of building and construction techniques
  • Ability to travel up to 30%

 

Preferred Experience

  • PHD or MS in civil engineering, structural engineering, architectural engineering or related
  • 3+ years in design or specification of building materials for construction projects
  • PE License preferred but not required
  • Experience in composite materials or traditional materials performance testing
  • Experience in the residential decking and outdoor living markets
  • Participation on codes or standards bodies
  • Experience building certification road maps for innovative materials
  • Track record of project leadership from concept to launch on large cross-functional teams

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Fluent in mechanical or structural CAD software like AutoDesk, ETABS, SOLIDWORKS, etc.
  • Good business and financial acumen to understand how work creates business impact.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication/presentation skills.
  • Strong desire to innovate and own delivery of project outcomes.
  • Team oriented, with high energy and desire to build strong relationships, collaborate and drive results across multi-functional and discipline boundaries in a dynamic, multi-project environment.
  • Ability to present data to multifunctional audiences and drive the decision-making process.
