PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Process Engineering Lead is responsible for process stability, including process controls improvements, quality initiatives, identifying and solving process issues, providing technical support to the plants, and implementing productivity gains. This requires the use of process engineering skills and leading through influence in our sites. This will also include commissioning and design of capital projects.
The main responsibility of the Process Engineering Lead is to collaborate with operations teams to improve and sustain stability of our shingle sites by increasing material efficiency, increasing machine uptime, and increasing process stability. This role will focus specifically on the wrapper, palletizer, and autocatcher areas to become the Subject Matter Expert for the Shingle sites, with a strong emphasis on controls systems.
Reports to: This position reports to the Roofing Corporate Engineering Leader
Span of Control: This position has no direct reports. This role is expected to provide support and coaching to Technical Leaders and the site subject matter experts across the division. This position will support all Shingle Manufacturing sites.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Living the Safety stand and adhering to safety responsibilities
- Educate team members on safe work processes and procedures and enforce good safety practices when visiting roofing plants
- Effectively communicate Owens Corning’s Safety Stand with external contractors/parties and ensure they work according to our safety standards
Wrapper, Palletizer, Autocatcher Subject Matter Expert
- Learn the Shingle Making process and become the expert for the wrapper, palletizer, and autocatcher process areas for the roofing division
- Lead projects and analyze process data, provide feedback to plants, and make recommendations to optimize process performance of the wrapper, palletizer, and autocatcher systems
- Drive improvements in process controls, including PLC logic, HMI interfaces, and automation strategies to enhance uptime and reliability
- Enable effective use of new process technologies in the Roofing process through training and enabling plant teams
- Network with roofing plants, Science & Technology (S&T), and other relevant groups to identify and implement best practices for continuous improvement of plant performance metrics
- Support the commissioning and startup of capital projects as needed
- Implement root-cause analysis and corrective actions for issues surfaced through losses, leveraging digital tools
Support Design and Commissioning of Capital & Productivity Projects
- Identify and implement equipment and controls system improvements, provide technical oversight for design reviews, and support commissioning efforts with the Capital Engineering team and Productivity team as needed. Utilize Lessons Learned after completion
- Ensure that preventative and predictive plans, work instructions, and other procedures related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of plant equipment and machinery are built and executed
- Commission and support project startup as the technical and process resource when applicable, working directly with plant and Capital engineering teams
Coaching and Consulting
- Support and train site employees at all levels from operators to leadership roles regarding technical information and problem solving, with a focus on Technical Leaders
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert for wrappers, palletizers, autocatchers, and associated controls systems
- Document knowledge into a knowledge repository and share knowledge with key personnel and stakeholders
JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related discipline preferred
- Will consider an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience within a manufacturing or technical environment; heavy manufacturing in a continuous operation or paper industry highly preferred
- 2+ years in process improvement/engineering type role preferred
- 3+ years in roofing process engineering and/or controls role preferred
- Ability to travel 40–50% as needed for role
- Certification in Six Sigma (Green Belt) preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to analyze and use data to drive sustainable equipment and controls improvements
- Experience with Rockwell Automation systems – drives, PLCs, HMIs, etc. preferred
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities or projects at one time
- Ability to influence without authority
- Can use data effectively to establish concrete Return on Investment (ROI) of suggestions
- Experience working in a cross-functional team environment and effectively transfer knowledge at all levels through effective communication skills
- Experience in Six Sigma including statistics, trial design, data analysis, and control charting
- Experience with project management; understand internal and external needs
- Computer and software competencies; skills in Braincube, Aspentech, and other industrial analytics platforms preferred
- Knowledge and experience with Root Cause Analysis, Failure Modes Effects and Analysis, and other Total Productive Maintenance activities preferred
The base salary range for this position is $89,000-$125,000 with the potential for
additional if the applicant hired has additional related qualifications. We also offer a substantial
