Asphalt Plant Mechanic

 

Job Function

The mechanic is responsible and accountable for maintaining equipment in the plant in a safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant condition. The mechanic strives to achieve the highest operating efficiency, job efficiency, and standard of performance possible while conducting machine set-up, troubleshooting, and repairs. The incumbent also optimizes the preventative/predictive maintenance process. The mechanic is responsible for communicating critical information concerning environmental compliance, homeland security, and operational issues to the designated associate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  •  Must be able to work 6AM - 2PM Monday - Friday, available, and respond to trouble calls on weekends and after hours.
  • Performs emergency/unscheduled re availablepairs of equipment during production and performs scheduled maintenance repairs during machine service.
  • Assists operators in more complicated repairs and adjustments where precision skills are needed.
  • Complete all reports and transactions required to document work in SAP.
  • Performs preventive maintenance tasks and inspections as required.
  • Reads and interprets equipment manuals and work orders to perform required work.
  • Fabricates and welds as needed to specifications.
  • Perform building maintenance as needed (lights, exhaust fans, painting, etc.).
  • Troubleshooting basics how to analyze a problem and the steps to identify the root causes. Helps reduce cycle time to problem resolution and eliminate the “replace and see what happens method”
    • A mechanic should be capable of repairing, maintaining, and troubleshooting the following equipment at a minimum:  Repairs, maintains, and troubleshoots: Pumps, Valves, Pipes, Burners, Filter Systems, Agitators, Blowers, Check Valves, PRDs, Pipe Insulation, Steam Traps, and Fans.
  • Uses all hand tools, special tools, and test equipment accurately and safely.
  • Demonstrates the ability to operate shop equipment.
  • Reviews and creates job hazard analysis.
  • Performs root and apparent cause analysis of chronic/repetitive/costly failures.
  • Provides technical and operational support as needed.
  • Follows oral and written communication instructions.

Knowledge / Skills / Experience

  • High school diploma or GED;  or one to three months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associate degree preferred.
  • Qualified Lift Truck / Bobcat Operator.
  • Knowledge of mechanical repairs, welding, electrical including PLC and electronic drives, fabrication, plumbing, etc.
  • Ability to take precision measurements.
  • Knowledge of industrial maintenance craft skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills (SAP, Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures.
  • Self-starter, motivated and goal oriented. Able to demonstrate good leadership skills, and risk management ability, and high stress tolerance.

Physical Demands

  • Vision: Must be capable of reading letters/numbers and have good color perception.
  • Full range of motion: Full, some bending, lifting, and standing for 8–12 hour period.
  • Lifting capacity: Must be capable of lifting minimum of 40 pounds.
  • Sitting/Standing/Climbing: Standing for 12 hours daily, and moving up and down stairs and working at elevated heights,

Work Environment

May work in dusty, dirty, hot, wet conditions or at heights. Requires stamina due to standing the majority of the day. May need to move moderately heavy cartons/cans of asphalt, Majority of time spent outside in the elements. Exposure to hazards such as hot equipment, product, and fumes. May work in an awkward position which exposes them to additional hazards.   Personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toe shoes is required.
