SUMMARY 

The Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Specialist position is a hands-on, practical resource to the EHS Leader and entire Owens Corning Medina Roofing and Asphalt plants. The purpose of this position will be to act as a leader in both safety and environmental fields, assist in developing and driving EHS goals, and maintain environmental compliance site wide. A successful candidate will work on a variety of high-level safety and environmental projects, team initiatives, and EHS programs. The EHS Specialist will maintain a culture of 0 NOV’s and drive a year-over-year reduction of ENCs. This position is intended for an individual with prior knowledge of and hands on environmental and safety experience, with a desire to build leadership skills to ultimately become an EHS leader. 

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

Safety: 

  • Backfill Safety Coordinator: conduct new-hire orientation and in-person refresher training 

  • Participate and lead incident response and investigation 

  • Complete on-the-floor safety audits 

  • Participate and lead EHS teams and projects 

  • Enforce safety rules and promote a safety culture 

 

Environmental: 

  • Knowledge of Title V, GACT, and other air permits 

  • Prepare and submit quarterly and semi-annual air compliance reports 

  • Assist with completing annual air emission report 

  • Complete and review environmental planned maintenance (PM) tasks 

  • Learn the function of control equipment and monitor its operating parameters (e.g., fiber bed filter, dust collector, incinerator, RTO) 

  • Assist with EPA and regulatory agency inspections 

  • Manage regulated waste accumulation and record-keeping (e.g., hazardous waste, universal waste) 

  • Assist with TRI and Tier II reporting (SARA) 

  • Drive sustainability projects to reduce waste to landfill and track/report waste internally monthly 

  • Manage and update SWPPP, SPCC, and SLUG plans 

  • Assist in water sampling and reporting 

 

Other Activities 

  • Occasional off-shift coverage 

  • Take plant-provided training to become a plant first responder 

  • Willingness to become certified forklift trainer  

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

The employee should hold the following abilities: 

  • Working knowledge of health and safety compliance law, as well as local & federal environmental regulations 

  • Strong communication skills: email, phone, and in-person interactions with environmental consultants and regulatory agencies 

  • Ability to lead and participate in EHS teams and projects 

  • Ability to act as a decision maker 

  • Has a very high attention to detail 

  • Set priorities and escalate issues in a timely manner  

  • Able to effectively communicate in English 

 

COMPUTER AND SOFTWARE COMPENTENCIES 

The employee must be able to: 

  • Must be able to operate a computer including Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, Access databases, as well as web-based tools as needed for environmental reporting and compliance tracking 

  • Ability to learn and use SAP 

  

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE 

  • Preferred working towards or having a degree in Safety and Environmental and or preferred certifications: CSP, CSHEP, etc. 

 

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT 

The employee should possess the ability to: 

  • Exposure to sounds or noise levels that maybe uncomfortable 

  • Be on feet in non-climate-controlled environment for up to 8 hours if needed 

  • Bending and twisting 

  • Repetitive Movements

Introductory Period
