SUMMARY

The purpose of the EHS Specialist position is to provide leadership level support to the Minneapolis Roofing and Asphalt facility in all facets of environmental health and employee health and safety. This position works directly with employees across the site to support a strong proactive safety culture and an effective, efficient, and compliant safety process. It is an expectation of the EHS Specialist to develop leadership and core EHS skills throughout the course of this role.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Accountable for employee safety

  • Be a safety advocate. Proactively look for opportunities to improve safety programs and educate and inspire employees to do the same. Drive and implement changes as needed
  • Serve as a technical resource to the site in EHS compliance, risk management, hazardous materials/waste, industrial hygiene, industrial safety, and/or ergonomics
  • Participate in incident investigations, ensuring root cause and countermeasure identification is completed to eliminate future injury
  • Review and analyze accident data to identify trends or areas requiring additional focus
  • Ensures site compliance with applicable site safety and environmental standards
  • Develops and implements safety training
  • Attends daily huddles and department meetings to communicate safety related items
  • Applies prescribed hazard analysis methodologies to understand at-risk conditions
  • Leads audits, investigations, & inspections as required and ensures follow up items are complete
  • Maintain the environmental compliance calendar and adhere to all reporting deadlines
  • Update and maintain safety programs
  • Coordinates safety efforts with plant supervision and relevant committees

 

  • Comply with all plant rules, safety regulations and maintain a clean and orderly work area
  • All other duties as assigned or needed.

 

Active participation in driving zero losses through TPM

  • Supports EHS pillar initiatives as part of TPM
  • Leads touch bases with EHS pillar representatives
  • Utilize standard checklist for TPM areas, supporting AM, PM and T&D Pillars
  • Leads and investigates loss case studies as it relates to the EHS Pillar
  • Update KAIs, KPIs, and DMS metrics on communication and pillar boards
  • Work directly with TPM Coordinator and T&D Coordinator to support site pillar progression in TPM
  • Actively communicate with EHS pillar SMEs regarding progress in SIF programs

 

Demonstrate the commitment to build an exceptional workplace environment; fostering open communication, employee engagement, and personal development

  • Take lead on most safety, environment projects
  • Strong involvement in site capital projects
  • Consistent presence and communication with all Minneapolis Roofing and Asphalt departments and facilities through routine visits and touch bases.
  • Build strong interpersonal relationships with employees across the Minneapolis Roofing and Asphalt facility
  • Execute and encourage “outside-the-box” thinking to find creative resolutions
  • Flexible in researching different solutions, ideas and adapts to last minute changes associated with production process or projects
  • Expands professional network through communication with other OC sites for best practice sharing, site specific audits or other corporate initiatives
  • Attend off-site and/or online technical courses and certifications to maintain up-to-date knowledge in safety and environmental areas.
  • Exhibits strong development in personal capabilities as it relates to leadership competencies and EH&S expectations. There must be strong evidence that this role drives professional development that translates to success in an EH&S leadership role.

  • Good understanding of manufacturing processes and the ability to apply the principals of TPM

COMPUTER AND SOFTWARE COMPENTENCIES

A strong candidate must be able to:

 

  • Utilize basic computer skills; ability to work in SAP, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Log into and navigate Owens Corning Learning portal to complete required online training routinely

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s Degree in Safety/Environmental is strongly preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in an industrial manufacturing or maintenance operations environment is strongly preferred
  • Minimum 2 years experience in safety and environmental practices is strongly preferred

 

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

A strong candidate should possess the ability to:

 

  • Work for up to 8 hours in extreme hot/cold manufacturing environment
  • Operate/sit/drive, as required during shift work lasting 8 - 12 hours
  • Able to do repetitive hand, arm, leg movements
  • Handle, control or feel objects, tools or control
  • Able to climb tanks to read gauges
  • Routinely ascend and descend stairs and forklift to enter work areas
  • Safeguard self with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – steel toed shoes, ear plugs, eye protection (glasses, goggles, and/or facemask) as necessary for task
  • Schedule flexibility as needed to accommodate operation needs
