PURPOSE OF THE JOB

 

The Process Controls & Automation Engineer is accountable for the creation, development, and deployment support of the next generation technology strategy for manufacturing process automation. This position is accountable to drive affordable and sustainable solutions to enable the transformation of Owens Corning manufacturing.

 

This individual will be expected to apply their technical expertise to create enterprise standards and collaborate closely with IT departments to develop reliable and scalable manufacturing IT/OT system architecture.

 

Reports to: Global Nonwoven Process Lead / Center of Excellence Lead

 

Span of Control:  Individual Contributor

 

Percentage Travel: 30-50%

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Developing and Executing the Automation Strategy (50%)

  • Engages in project planning teams to identify automation opportunities.
  • Continuously drives to deliver the strategic objectives and supporting goals.
  • Understands Automation performance metrics (OEE, cycle time optimization) leveraging digital capabilities for reporting
  • Introduces new, or improved existing, automation solutions in factory production lines to advance existing processes via mechanical/electronic/computer technology.
  • Participating in addressing business-wide platform and technology requirements for applications.
  • Provides technology support for the direction of the automation portfolio and leverage assets to support growth.
  • Builds rapport and develops partnerships to work effectively with all levels across the organization including Science & Technology, IT, and Operations.
  • Builds connections across the enterprise and automation teams to collaborate on the creation of automation, controls, and IT/OT standards.
  • Applies mechatronic solutions to the transfer of material, components or finished goods.
  • Applies project management skills and leadership to deliver successful project outcomes.

 

Knowing Our Products and Processes (30%)

  • Understands the Nonwovens business, manufacturing processes, and customers
  • Understands the positioning of our products in the marketplace.
  • Understands industry automation trends and how process changes influence new technology demands.
  • Understands industry automation, technology, and digital trends
  • Partners with customers and stakeholders to scope new solutions and to translate needs into innovation opportunities.
  • Seeks solutions that can be deployed horizontally throughout global Nonwovens business.

 

Process Innovation & New Product Industrialization (10%)

  • Leverages Open Innovation and VSU Startup methodologies as a competitive weapon and establishes OC’s position in the market as an automation innovator.
  • Develops processes for new products with a focus on robotics, automation, and mechatronics to advance our capabilities at a rapid MVP (minimum viable product) rate.

 

Growing Our People (10%)

  • Collaborates on VSU and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) methodologies as our culture for doing rapid innovation and early management as a core competency of the organization.
  • Engages in growth and development (i.e. seminars, further education, etc.) for your area of expertise.
  • Drives competitive advantage and lean cost structure in your space. Utilizes “team of teams” concepts with internal and external stakeholders to build robust programs with rapid innovation cycles.
  • Helps other teams succeed through easy-to-use tooling, monitoring, and automation that you create.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5-10 years of experience in the development and deployment of automation technology.
  • Deep understanding of sensors, robotics, IT/OT systems and various controls for automated systems.
  • Proficiency with process integration and mechatronic systems.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Degree in science or engineering.
  • A strong background in process development and/or product innovation.
  • Technical experiences in manufacturing or deploying automation with a detailed knowledge of current automation technologies including robotics and advanced manufacturing methods and technologies.
  • Experienced in the development of specific automation manufacturing systems incorporating flexible and modular automation.
  • Understands industry trends, direction and standards that guide new technology offerings, and uses technology and market intelligence to provide strategic recommendations on initiatives to achieve business objectives.
  • Proficiency in Allen Bradley and Siemens PLC programming
  • Ability to perform system design, programming, simulation and testing.2
  • PackML, ISA standards, and other automation industry standard/affiliations
