The Associate Scientist I position is a key contributor to technological advances within a testing lab that handles asphalt-based roofing materials to support the roofing business at Owens Corning and external product support for Trumbull Asphalt. This position plays a key role in the function of the Asphalt Technical Services & Testing Laboratory (ATSTL) located in Summit, Illinois.
The Associate Scientist I will support development of new and existing asphalt products by executing asphalt blending, oxidation and testing requests. They will work closely with scientists and engineers in both the Summit ATSTL and Granville Science and Technology Center. They will be expected to work with R&D partners to understand their testing needs, complete blending, oxidizing and testing safely and accurately, and communicate progress and results timely. The Associate Scientist I will be required to carry out new test methods occasionally to facilitate completion of development projects. They will be required to travel occasionally to the Science and Technology Center in Granville, to North American manufacturing locations, and to development experiences.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Demonstrate a Commitment to Safety
- Ensure rigorous compliance to standard safety procedures and OC corporate policies.

- Reads and understands Safety Data Sheets, Job Hazard Assessments, and Standard Operating Procedures.
Execute Effective Project, Product, and Asphalt Material Testing
- Run pilot-scale oxidizers to support formulation work, customer requests and annual asphalt quality characterizations.
- Prepare asphalt samples, including blending different asphalt materials and other modifiers to asphalt.
- Perform standard and non-standard laboratory testing of asphalt materials (ASTM, AASHTO and other methods), including physical, chemical, and rheological testing.
- Help maintain the AASHTO (AMRL) accreditation.
- Prepare and calibrate laboratory equipment and testing apparatus.
- Record data accurately and completely using existing software tools and methods.
- Provide technical testing and support during roofing pilot trials.
- Collaborate with lab peers and partners to understand, clarify, and execute the testing required.
- Communicates regularly with lab peers and partners by playing an active role in prioritizing testing, communicating progress, and reporting accurate data.
- Maintain the organization, cleanliness and functionality of the laboratory and equipment.
- Support research and development projects by providing blending and testing of asphalt-based formulations and collaborate with R&D scientists and engineers to develop new asphalt roofing products.
- Stay updated with the latest asphalt lab techniques and technology.
Foster sharing and a team environment
- Team with other professionals to share knowledge, develop, and implement ideas.
- Maintain individual certifications through lab.
- Practice good housekeeping habits to ensure quality of lab, equipment, and results.
- Make recommendations for upgrades to the existing systems and processes, as well as develop and implement these improvements within capabilities.
- Support and train contractors and ensure all OC safety standards are followed.
- Support capital programs as needed for the Lab to upgrade facilities and equipment.
- Engage and be accountable for growth and development opportunities to improve capabilities to prepare for future career growth.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma
- 1-3 years of experience in Quality Control and/or Research & Development lab environment.
- Demonstrate ability to develop and meet key milestones, to work and communicate effectively with people at multiple levels within the organization, and to technically contribute to the development of solutions.
- Understand and have good basic computer skills. A working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) is required.
- Demonstrate mechanical, hands-on aptitude.
- Demonstrate management skills with ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Up to 10% travel needed to support project work and development opportunities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Asphalt related lab blending and testing experience a plus.
- Proven track record of reliable data collection and transaction.
