PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Operations Manager is accountable for providing support for our 24/7 manufacturing operation and associated processes. This person must have a strong sense of personal commitment towards the business and our customers; an ability to foster teamwork throughout the organization; communicate effectively with all levels ranging from primary workforce to plant leadership. The Operations Manager must build a culture of trust, respect, and accountability in a Union environment. In addition, the individual in this position helps to implement organizational strategies, standards and practices enrolling employees to achieve the Plant’s business strategy and deliver results.
Reports to: Operations Leader
Span of Control: 16 primary direct reports & 4 Salaried Supervisor
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Live the Safety stand, adhere to the safety responsibilities
The Hot End Complex Leader will have responsibility for:
- Ensuring a safe, clean, and environmentally compliant work environment and building a culture where safety is a first priority
- Leading and supporting safety initiatives and processes to drive towards zero recordable injuries
- Training and developing employees to safely perform their jobs
- Effectively communicating Owens Corning’s stand on safety throughout the department to ensure employees believe in and behave in a manner that supports our stand that all accidents are preventable, safety is everyone’s responsibility, and that working safely is a condition of employment at Owens Corning
Executing Strategy and Managing Operations
The Hot End Complex Leader will have responsibility for:
- Lead operations in the hot end area of the plant to include the Batch, Binder, Melting, and Forming processes.
- Provide direct supervision to employees in Hot End Areas. Coach and provide clear direction to effectively manage operations.
- Partner with Manufacturing Engineers (Line, Binder, & Furnace) to identify and drive continuous improvement efforts through standardized work to improve cost, grow year-over-year productivity and reduce quality related issues for our customers
- Ensure effective deployment of employee/labor relations practices (building strong partnership)
- Ensure the process and quality systems are utilized to provide a consistent product that meets manufacturing specifications
- Operate with zero environmental non-conformities to applicable company, government, and regulatory policies
- Proactively analyzes and manages all relative operations performance metrics making improvements to efficiencies, quality, and cost
- Set clear and measurable performance expectations, in line with plant goals; communicating and ensuring results are achieved for self and direct reports
- Utilizing data driven decision-making processes
- Facilitating process improvements through people deployment, productivity enhancements, high performance work teams and being a model for change
- Leading a lean culture environment through six sigma processes and TPM toolsets
- Living the values and vision of the Company; establish an engaged workforce characterized by mutual trust, open communications, teamwork, and recognition
- Making operational decisions or recommendations that could affect the financial, employee, or public relations posture of the organization
- Set area objectives and priorities in support of the Plant’s strategy and vision, and for developing teams to deliver results in support of these objectives and priorities, leaving daily tactical direction to Production employees
- Assign and coordinate work in a manufacturing department to include supervising first line leaders
- Build an inclusive environment to drive sustainable operations
Knowing Our Customers
- Partner with peers, manufacturing engineers, process engineers, etc. to clearly understand process and customers FFUs so Waxahachie can meet/exceed customer expectations
- Assists in driving to zero defects or failures to customer
- Ensuring operational procedures exist and are followed to product specifications and quality metrics are met to meet customers’ needs
Leading and Developing Talent
The Hot End Complex Leader will have responsibility for:
- Set clear and measurable performance expectations for self and direct reports aligning with the Waxahachie Plant, Division and Corporate goals
- Establish an engaged workforce characterized by mutual trust, open communications, teamwork, and recognition
- Maintain documentation, track, counsel and execute coaching and corrective action when performance issues occur
- Create work standards for the hot end and partner with the Talent Leader to execute training for employees in the Batch, Furnace, Binder, and Forming.
- Creating and sustaining a culture where talent is developed through effective performance management and talent evaluation.
- Establishing clear and measurable expectations of performance and review commitments to ensure goals are achieved.
- Actively leading and building effective work teams and committees to increase plant performance and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Engineering or related discipline preferred
- Minimum of 3 years manufacturing experience
- Minimum 2 years leading people in a complex manufacturing environment or successful completion of the Manufacturing Leadership Program
EXPERIENCE:
- Experience leading in a Union environment
- Manufacturing Engineer experience preferred
- Six Sigma certification and Lean manufacturing experience preferred
- Willingness to relocate in the future with OC
- TPM knowledge and understanding
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Advanced knowledge of the people, process, and equipment for the hot end operation of the plant
- Business and financial acumen
- Ability to compile and utilize data and/or Six Sigma methods for problem-solving and decision-making to eliminate manufacturing losses and unnecessary costs
- Creating and implementing strategic and operations plans
- Leading and motivating peers, direct reports, and primary workforce
- Effective with verbal and written communication
- Strong planning, resourcing, and effective delegation skills
- Able to engage and care for others starting with safety
- Capable of achieving results fast both individually and through teams
