PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Waxahachie Sr Safety Specialist is responsible for building a plant and/or department culture with an unconditional stance on safety. The Sr Safety Specialist will lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of critical safety, health and Environmental processes/programs/procedures to achieve a zero-injury environment. The successful candidate will provide leadership and apply technical abilities to engage employees at all levels of the organization to develop and sustain world-class safety and environmental process. This position reports to the EHS Leader.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Sr Safety Specialist will establish and accomplish aggressive personal, and facility goals that align with division and Owens Corning corporate goals. These goals will reflect a total commitment to developing a strong safety culture, achieving a world-class safety process and the environmentally responsible operation of the facility. The Sr Safety Specialist will develop skills and grow capabilities in the assigned facility, including:

  • Develop and update our Critical Six, Safety Foundations and SIF Programs at the plant as main activity for this role
  • Engage team and employees to be safer together through a safety culture reinforcing proactive and positive safety behaviors
  • Develop, implement and/or monitor EHS action plans and programs to ensure a high level of safety and environmental awareness within the facility.
  • Translates safety and health strategies into results.
  • Maintain and update EHS information (charts, and graphs) and communicate metrics.
  • Develop and implement training programs in a coordinated effort with NLT, EHS Leader and appropriate plant personnel.
  • Maintain all EHS training documentation as required by corporate and federal/state standards.
  • Coordinate necessary EHS audits and inspections as required and ensures follow-up items are completed.
  • Conduct and document all Hazard Identifications, positive safety interractions, facility audits, etc.
  • Assist in recordable injury, first-aid and near-miss investigations and in the development and implementation of action plans.
  • Conduct regular facility inspections.
  • Achievement of personal, department and facility goals.
  • Continuously educate employees on EHS standards and procedures.
  • Perform safety orientations and monthly safety training.
  • Actively participate in the implementation of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) efforts and implementing Autonomous Maintenance (AM) practices and visual metrics for EHS processes.
  • Actively participate on the EHS Pillar Team
  • Continually reinforce the company’s stand on safety and environmental stewardship and always recognize employee accomplishments and contributions.
  • Empowers employees to prevent or stop and correct unsafe acts or work conditions
  • Builds organizational capabilities through people, technology, and process management.
  • 100% Completion of training plan and certified competence of all employees trained.
  • Perform other functions related to sustaining the Site Safety and Environmental Programs as directed by the EHS Leader.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Level of Education required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in any field related to EH&S, such as industrial hygiene, engineering, science or equivalent
  • 3 to 5+ years of experience leading EHS efforts in an industrial manufacturing setting
  • ASP or CSP certification preferred

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Demonstrate sound leadership on the job through safety performance, communication skills and teamwork
  • Good organizational skills
  • Knowledge and technically adept in implementation of OSHA, EPA and other general industry EHS standards
  • Comfortable in identification and coaching of unsafe acts or behaviors for both salary and hourly employees
  • Ability to establish agreement and consensus with management
  • Ability to effectively engage primary employees is critical
  • Ability to promote a team environment and must be able to initiate, lead and drive cross-functional team projects to successful completion
  • Adept in developing and delivering safety training
  • Highly ethical: Can be trusted to do only the “right thing” for the employees, shareholders and others. Follows a balanced approach without compromising integrity.

  • Basic computer skills and be proficient in Microsoft Office products, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access
  • SAP® Enterprise Software
  • 70% of his/ her schedule on the ground/ 30% at his/ her desk

Essential Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • Work up to 12 hours in non-climate-controlled manufacturing environment
  • Safeguard self and others with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - steel-toed shoes, eye protection (glasses, goggles, and/or facemask), hearing protection and long-sleeved shirt and pants as necessary for tasks

Ability to work overtime/ weekend and night shift as necessary
