 PURPOSE OF THE JOB

 

The CNC Machinist provides advanced machining and programming expertise to support die and mold fabrication within the Tooling Department. This role ensures efficient setup, operation, and programming of CNC machinery, while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and throughput. The machinist will lead shift operations, mentor junior machinists, and drive continuous improvement in machining processes and tooling design.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Living Safely

  • Adheres to all BJA and OC safety protocols and policies.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work environment.
  • Actively participates in safety meetings and promotes a culture of safety.

 

Machining Operations & Programming

  • Setup and operate CNC milling machines (Okuma, Nidec, Haas, Toyoda, and manual equipment).
  • Program CNC machines using G/M code based on customer drawings and specifications.
  • Evaluate and optimize machine feeds, speeds, and cutting tools to improve throughput and reduce costs.
  • Perform part inspections using micrometers, calipers, height indicators, and other precision tools.
  • Make mechanical and/or program adjustments to ensure parts meet quality standards.

 

Tooling Design & CAD

  • Utilize Autodesk software to view 2D and 3D CAD drawings.
  • Analyze drawings and design data to determine correct dimensions, tool selection, and machining parameters.

 

Team Leadership & Workflow Management

  • Monitor daily activities of crew members, ensuring productivity and team cooperation.
  • Adjust work assignments to maintain effective workflow and meet production schedules.
  • Serve as the primary training resource for less experienced machinists.
  • Fill in on equipment as needed to maintain schedule adherence.

 

 

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience in machine shop and CNC mill operations.
  • Proficient in G-code and M-code programming.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing practices and tooling selection.
  • Skilled in using precision measuring equipment to inspect parts within ±0.002” tolerances.
  • Basic proficiency in mathematics and general computing.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • 2–5 years of programming experience using MasterCAM and AutoCAD.
  • Trade school, associate degree, or certificate in a related field.
  • Strong communication, decision-making, and motivational skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

The minimum annual base salary for this position is $70,000 + bonus + benefits. Base pay may increase depending on job-related knowledge, skills and experience. This information is specific to the state of IL and may not be applicable to other areas.
